In the end, it wasn't a god that ended 'life as we knew it'. Nor was it disease, and although what one could call zombies were a part of it, it was war. A global war of epic proportions that left billions dead, not to mention the millions of towns that were completely wiped off the planet by nuclear bombs. Most of the survivors died due to radiation, starvation, disease, or they were devoured by wild animals. But here, somewhere in the US, there may be hope for humankind. The nearby towns are just deserted, not nuked. The forests have few predators and much prey. It's probably the safest place in the entire country. Plus, the climate is quite human-friendly. Hot in summer, cold in winter - but not that hot, and not that cold.
One would think that this would be true beginning. What else could happen?
There was a nomadic group of people in the southern area of the forest - closest to the town. When their allies hadn't heard from them for several months, they went to investigate. What they found was a gruesome sight. Rotting bodies everywhere. Men, woman, and children alike. The blame went from tribe to tribe, and wars were waged. The bodies kept piling up, both from the wars and the strange killings. Until one day, when figures began leaving the town they called home.
They were terrifying. In every way they were normal people, aside from one thing. Was it their eyes, enchanting and alluring? Their dark personalities? It couldn't possibly be because from their shoulderblades sprouted huge leathery wings, could it? Although hostile at first, the humans were able to befriend them. The creatures called themselves demons, though they weren't immortal bringers of sin at all. Some were actually quite friendly and kind upon a closer look. They spoke of people like themselves, but those people had feathered wings. And those creatures slowly began to pop up all around. Just as the demons could be sweet, the angels could be wicked - they were as diverse as humans. What, then, was the real difference between them? Were they not just humans with wings? The debate goes on, but so far no mix of any of the three has reproduced. If some can, then the three must surely be close. Time will tell...
